BOFAS Minimally Invasive Surgery Course:
Percutaneous surgery is emerging as an essential tool in the armamentarium of modern-day Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle surgery. One of the challenges has always been in training, as the specialised instruments and techniques of tactile feedback using radiographic guidance are quite different from the more traditional open techniques with direct visualization. As percutaneous MIS surgery becomes more widespread globally, I feel that the apprentice style training needs to be augmented with focused training offered by experts on cadaveric courses such as this. This is especially important for established surgeons who wish to add these useful techniques to their armamentarium without the benefit of dedicated fellowship experience.
This first BOFAS principles course has been designed as a collaborative project of the Education Committee of the Society with the help of expert surgeons experienced in percutaneous surgery. It is designed to teach high level percutaneous surgery, with a strong focus on hands on cadaveric lab exposure with 70% of the course time spent in the lab, one cadaveric specimen per delegate and a delegate to faculty ratio of 2:1 to allow for good, supervised instruction.
The course fee is heavily subsidised by Industry, includes 2 nights’ accommodation and a course dinner and as such is one of the best value independent cadaveric courses in the field. Following the ethos of all BOFAS instructional courses, the course will be conducted in an informal and interactive environment, to facilitate good discussions with faculty throughout the event.
